What is Kybella?
Kybella received FDA approval in 2015 for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat (double chin) in adults via injection to the affected area. Kybella is a formulation of deoxycholic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body that helps to break down and absorb dietary fat. It works by destroying fat cells and once destroyed, the cells cannot store or collect fat. The end result is a nicely contoured chin.
In addition to reducing the appearance of the dreaded double chin, Kybella can be administered in other parts of the body that hold onto excess fat. You may want to consider Kybella treatments along your bra line as a non-surgical way to banish that bothersome armpit fat or around your bra. How many Kybella treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed will depend on your desired result. Up to six treatments may be administered, no less than one month apart. Most patients see improvement in their chin definition in two to four treatments.
What can I expect during and after treatment?
Expect a moderate amount of swelling in the injected area that may last one to three weeks. Other common side effects are redness, bruising and soreness in the treated area.
About one month after the treatment, most patients experience reduction in fat and some tightening of skin in the treated area that continues to improve over the next three to five months.
Kybella’s formula destroys the fat cells, so the effects are permanent and the cells can no longer accumulate or store the fat.
